n 1967, 19-year-old Winfred Rembert was pulled from a jail cell in Georgia and nearly lynched by a mob — one of the only people on record known to have survived one. He carried that trauma for decades, until a friendship with Dr. Shirley Jackson Whitaker, the physician who treated him, changed how he faced it. In 2016, Whitaker did something the country had never done: she held a funeral for the more than 4,000 African Americans lynched during the Jim Crow era who were never given one. A New Yorker Documentary, Ashes to Ashes follows both journeys — Rembert's survival and the art he turned to for healing, and Whitaker's mission to finally speak the names of the thousands who were denied even a proper burial.

There was a time when a Black family couldn't just get in the car and drive across Georgia. You needed a book to tell you where it was safe to stop. The Green Book, started in 1936 by Harlem mail carrier Victor Hugo Green, listed hotels, restaurants, gas stations, salons, and private homes across America that would actually serve Black travelers. Georgia had its own listings — Macon's Douglass Hotel, service stations on Atlanta's Auburn Avenue, and more. A few things the video didn't have room for: mail carriers were the secret engine of the whole thing. Postmen knew exactly which homes on their routes would take in travelers, and they mailed reams of listings to Green. Readers sent in their own suggestions too — user-generated content decades before the internet. It sold about 15,000 copies a year at its peak, and being listed as a "tourist home" was considered an honor. It stopped publishing in the 1960s after the Civil Rights Act. Most of the buildings are gone now, but a few, like Thomasville's Imperial Hotel, still stand. Lena Baker was the only woman ever executed by the state of Georgia. In 1944, Lena Baker, a Black woman from rural Georgia, killed Ernest Knight, a white man. Baker said he had held her captive in his gristmill, repeatedly sexually assaulted her, and threatened her with a pistol when she tried to escape. During the struggle, she shot him. She was arrested, tried before an all-white, all-male jury, and convicted of murder. The trial lasted just one day, and after only a brief deliberation, the jury sentenced her to death. On March 5, 1945, Lena Baker was executed in Georgia's electric chair. She was 44 years old. Six decades later, in 2005, the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles granted her a posthumous pardon. The board did not declare her innocent, but concluded that the state had failed to fully consider the circumstances surrounding the case and that clemency should have been granted. Today, Lena Baker's case is remembered as one of the most controversial examples of racial and gender injustice in the American legal system. History should be remembered not forgotten
