King gained national attention after his 1991 beating by Los Angeles officers was captured on video, sparking the 1992 Los Angeles riots following the officers' acquittal. Police in Rialto, California, received a 911 call from King’s fiancee, Cynthia Kelly, about 5:25 a.m. Responding officers found King at the bottom of the pool, removed him and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital, police said. King was 47. King sued the city of Los Angeles and was awarded $3.8 million in damages.
