On February 27, 1967, Wharlest Jackson Sr., a husband, father, Korean War veteran, and civil rights leader, was murdered in one of the most notorious acts of racial terrorism during the Civil Rights Era. Jackson had recently accepted a promotion at the Armstrong Tire and Rubber Company in Natchez, Mississippi. The position had long been reserved for white employees. By earning it, he challenged the racial barriers that had defined the workplace for generations. That decision made him a target. As he drove home from work, a bomb hidden beneath the driver's seat of his truck exploded, killing him instantly. According to historical accounts, his young son, who was only 8 years old, arrived at the scene and witnessed the devastating aftermath. The killing was widely believed to have been carried out by members of the Silver Dollar Group, a violent Ku Klux Klan organization operating in Mississippi. Although the FBI identified suspects and conducted an extensive investigation, no one was ever convicted or imprisoned for Jackson's murder. Wharlest Jackson's story is a reminder of the deadly consequences many Black Americans faced simply for seeking equal opportunity, fair employment, and basic human dignity. Mississippi’s Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Staci Turner, is facing intense scrutiny after her office handled several high-profile deaths of Black residents under circumstances that many believe remain unresolved or improperly ruled. The cases include: Nolan Xavier Wells, 18, whose body was found in the water near Horn Island in July 2026. Authorities quickly called it an accidental drowning. His family, represented by attorney Ben Crump, ordered an independent autopsy. Early findings have raised more questions than answers. Damien Cameron, 29, who died in 2021 after a violent arrest by Rankin County deputies later tied to the notorious “Goon Squad.” Turner’s office ruled the death “undetermined” even though the autopsy showed internal bleeding in his neck consistent with compression. Independent forensic pathologists later concluded it was a homicide. Demartravion “Trey” Reed, 21, a Delta State University student found hanging from a tree on campus in September 2025. Officials ruled it a suicide. His family has never accepted that conclusion and ordered their own independent autopsy. Channon Wilson, a 13-year-old boy whose 2022 drowning death was ruled accidental without a full autopsy. His family has long claimed he was thrown into the water and that evidence was mishandled. Only one of these cases — Damien Cameron’s — has been independently reviewed and directly contradicted the state’s findings. The others remain clouded by unanswered questions, pending reports, or families who say they were never given the full truth. In a state still living with the memory of lynchings, every unexplained Black death carries heavier weight. Families and advocates argue that when the same medical examiner’s office repeatedly delivers rulings that leave more questions than answers, trust collapses. This is not just about one death. THE ORIGINAL BLACK PANTHER — THE DEACONS FOR DEFENSE Before the Black Panther Party there were the Deacons for Defense and Justice — Black men, mostly veterans, who decided in 1964 that nonviolent protest had limits when the Ku Klux Klan was burning churches and shooting civil rights workers. 🔥 Founded in Jonesboro Louisiana in 1964 the Deacons for Defense were primarily working-class Black men who had served in World War Two and Korea. They had trained with weapons. They had faced enemy fire. They were not afraid of night riders in white sheets. ✊🏾 They organized armed patrols of Black neighborhoods in Louisiana and Mississippi. They provided armed escorts for CORE and SNCC civil rights workers who were being targeted for violence. When KKK motorcades came through Black communities the Deacons met them. The results were measurable. The Klan largely avoided towns where the Deacons were known to be active. Authorities released photos on Thursday of two suspects wanted for a violent assault on a 73-year-old man who was defending a pregnant woman while aboard an Upper West Side MTA bus earlier this month. The incident took place on Friday, June 5, at approximately 6:30 p.m. According to police, the victim was riding an M104 bus near Broadway and West 92nd Street when he noticed the suspects harassing a pregnant woman about her carriage blocking the path on the bus. The two suspects then engaged him in a verbal altercation and the confrontation rapidly escalated as the suspects began punching the victim repeatedly across his head and body. During the assault, one of the suspects brandished a knife and stabbed the man in his left shoulder, police said. Both suspects fled the bus on foot to an unknown location. EMS transported the victim to Mount Sinai Morningside, where he was treated and listed in stable condition.
