Jenifer Lewis has been very open about her struggles with sex addiction. In interviews and in her memoir, she explained that sex became a way for her to cope with pain, insecurity, and emotional issues during her younger years. Lewis said she had sexual relationships with 63 men before realizing her behavior had become unhealthy. She has described sex as her “drug of choice” and said she did not fully confront the addiction until the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s. As HIV/AIDS deaths increased and public awareness grew, she began to examine her own behavior and seek help. Lewis later entered therapy and recovery, and has spoken publicly about overcoming addiction, living with bipolar disorder, and learning healthier ways to deal with trauma and emotional challenges. Today, she often shares her story to encourage others to seek help and to reduce the stigma around addiction and mental health.
