Army Veteran Fatally Shot in Walmart Parking Lot Dispute Over Spot; Woman Claims Self-Defense.
A 62-year-old retired Army veteran from Lauderhill died after being shot during an argument over a parking space at a North Lauderdale Walmart on June 30th.
The preliminary investigation determined that Diguglielmo and an unidentified adult woman had been involved in a verbal altercation over a parking spot. Cellphone video of the confrontation shows the man approaching the area near the vehicles as the situation escalated. A witness told WPLG the woman had warned Diguglielmo during the argument that she would shoot if he kept coming toward her.
The woman stayed at the scene, cooperated with detectives, and told them the shooting was in self-defense, the Broward Sheriff’s Office stated. Paramedics with North Lauderdale Fire Rescue transported Diguglielmo to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Diguglielmo, a New Jersey native and retired U.S. Army Staff Sergeant who also worked as a trauma nurse, was a father of three. His daughter, Amanda, spoke with WPLG and said she couldn’t believe anyone would lose their life over a parking spot. She also pushed back hard against any claims that her father had made some kind of advance toward the woman, calling that narrative completely false and not who her dad was.
But the video shows Diguglielmo following the woman multiple times with his fists balled up in a threatening manner.
No charges have been filed against the woman. The Broward Sheriff’s Office says homicide detectives are still wrapping up their work, including reviewing the available video and witness statements.
