8 dead, dozens hurt over holiday weekend in Chicago, including 14 shot during Juneteenth party
A 14-year-old boy was among eight people killed over the long holiday weekend that saw nearly 40 others wounded, including 14 people shot during a Juneteenth celebration on the Far South Side.
Marcus Chatman, 14, was shot multiple times around 11:30 p.m. Thursday in the 8000 block of South Carpenter Street in Auburn Gresham, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
Marcus played for the Midwest Hawks youth football team in Country Club Hills.
“Though his life was taken far too soon, his memory will forever remain a part of the Midwest Hawks family,” the team said in a statement.8 dead, dozens hurt over holiday weekend in Chicago, including 14 shot during Juneteenth party A 14-year-old boy was among eight people killed over the long holiday weekend that saw nearly 40 others wounded, including 14 people shot during a Juneteenth celebration on the Far South Side. For decades, alcohol was seen as a rite of passage into adulthood. Nights out, pub culture, and weekend drinking became deeply woven into social life across many parts of the world. 🍾🍻
But attitudes are starting to shift.
Research suggests that Gen Z is consuming significantly less alcohol than previous generations did at the same age. More young adults are choosing moderation, opting for low or no-alcohol alternatives, or avoiding drinking entirely as they prioritize fitness, mental health, self-improvement, and overall wellbeing.
This changing behavior has raised concerns across the alcohol industry. Major beverage companies have lost hundreds of billions in market value in recent years. While the widely cited “$830 billion” figure largely reflects declines in company valuations rather than direct sales losses, it highlights growing uncertainty about the industry’s long-term outlook.
Rather than spending heavily on alcohol, many younger consumers are putting their money toward travel, experiences, fitness, gaming, technology, and wellness. At the same time, non-alcoholic drinks have become one of the fastest-growing categories in the beverage market as consumer habits continue to evolve.
For the first time in generations, choosing not to drink is becoming increasingly normal and socially accepted. What was once considered unusual is now part of a broader cultural shift.
Do you see Gen Z’s changing relationship with alcohol as a positive development, or has drinking culture simply evolved? #factsFor decades, alcohol was seen as a rite of passage into adulthood. This isn't getting talked about enough. Especially for us who live in SOUTH CAROLINA.. This happened in April of 2026 here in Aiken SC.
I'm standing 10 toes down with this family. Everyone this is Shaniqua Simmons. She is the mother of 17 year old Kahlil Simmons. On April 13, 3 people, Tyler Hans Lariscey, Jared Grant, and a 16 year old killed her son. They were arrested and charged with murder. The parents of one of the kids was arrested as well for accessory after the fact. They tried to help cover up the murder. So, here's what we know. Kahlil was a good kid. He wasn't in any type of gang, he was on track to graduate high school early. He was college bound. As of right now, no motive has been found by the police on why they killed her son. Here's where this gets even crazier. 8 days after her son was killed, the police arrest Shaniqua. She was arrested for presenting a firearm and having a gun. Allegedly, she got into an altercation with the sister of one of the boys who killed her son. Shaniqua then followed them and pulled a gun on them. As a parent, I understand. This woman just lost her son a week prior. I'll bet you they said some wicked sh@# to her and she snapped! The police can't find a motive on why they killed her son, but the picture tells me everything I need to know. We should be supporting and standing with Shaniqua Simmons!! She and her family deserves justice!!This isn't getting talked about enough. Especially for us who live in SOUTH CAROLINA.. This happened in April of 2026 here in Aiken SC.
