In 1820, getting sick on an American plantation was not just a medical event. It was a political one. It was an economic one. And in too many cases, it was a death sentence — not because of the disease itself, but because of what was done to "treat" it. This video walks you through what really happened when an enslaved person fell ill on a Southern plantation during the antebellum era. The forced delay before illness was even acknowledged. The plantation hospital that wasn't really a hospital.
The white physicians who used aggressive bloodletting, mercury-based purgatives, and procedures they considered too risky for white patients — because the prevailing medical "science" of the era held that Black bodies could tolerate it. The medical experiments conducted on enslaved women without anesthesia, by doctors who were celebrated as pioneers in their field. And alongside all of that, something most American history textbooks never mention: an entire parallel medical tradition, developed and maintained by enslaved healers themselves, that was often more effective, more humane, and more sophisticated than anything the white doctors were doing.
